Kinja'd!!!

The 90's car article got me thinking, I grew up doomed, in the sense that I'd be driving cars from the nineties. Yes, there was some good cars, but most of the sensible cars were boring! The type of cars I and my peers could afford were almost always from the nineties, assuming no help from parents. I ended up with a 97 Jetta Autotragic and many of my friends seemed to be driving some form of Taurus or another from sometime in the 90's. So we are looking at roughly 10 year old cars.

So by the time my kid will be 16 he'll have his choice from cars like the '19 Fusion or an '17 Honda Accord, or who knows what! Perhaps he'll have to go somewhat older, as I am sure the Jetta I bought for $1500 held it's value much less well than a '18 Taurus, or shit, even a '17 Jetta likely would. But still, even the cars coming out right now, it could be argued, will be much better than the '90's cars some of us were doomed to buy, by being born in the '80's or early '90's.

But in the end... You know what? I loved my '97 Jetta, it was a piece of shit, but I was proud to be its owner and was proud to keep it running for 4+ years. Would I have been prouder of a '13 Fusion in the year 2029? Perhaps...

I think it's just a matter of cars (despite how much we like to complain) continuously getting better. Imagine having to grow up with cars from the 80's, or the 70's. Sure there were standout cars from every era, but the quality of the average car has been increasing over time. I'd much rather drive an average quality car from the 90s than most earlier eras.

The only problem I see is that the aforementioned Taurus' have been replaced by Camrys and Corollas.

I suppose you are right, that cars from the eighties weren't much better, but 60's and 70's muscle was within reach with sub $1 gas prices. That is something I am very jealous of and wished I could have experienced.

I was thinking about this the other day...my boy is 5 months atm, and in 16 years I am fairly sure that he and I will have an epic time picking his first ride. And that led to the thought that the brand new Dart we have in the driveway will likely be a bargain basement car by then, and it is just soooooo good...I'm looking foward to it.

Yeah, that'd make for an excellent first car! And that's the point I'm making, even the sensible cars currently, I think, will be far nicer sensible cars than what I could select from when I came of car-purchasing-age.

My car however... I will never put my child in an SHO, at least not as a 1st, 2nd or maybe even 3rd car, haha.

I understand, I test drove a SHO before we bought the Dart...and it blew my mind. That a HUGE car could move that quick and corner the way it did...the salesman was white knuckled, I'll tell you. If it had been 10 grand less...I'd have it instead, family Ford bias be damned.

Nahh, there's some good stuff too. Just hit me, the CLA will likely depreciate into first car territory in that time, and that thing is just soooo pretty.

Haha I test drove it... I bought it. I got a used example though, 2010.

It is incredibly fast for its weight, the linear torque curve is something else. I can't wait to get a tune on it, from what I hear it re-blows your mind. It goes from 5.2 seconds to 60mph, to <4 seconds to 60mph....

And yet the base model Taurus has higher performance than the original SHOs, and you have no problem sticking your kid with a few hours of driving experience behind the wheel of one...
